SYMESOK

Dusko Zarkovic
1994 to Today:
My cooperation with the Cyprus State Orchestra started in 1994. I have
been playing the first clarinet in the State Orchestra of Cyprus in Nicosia
ever since January 1995 when I became a permanent member of the
orchestra. During this period I have played at all the events where the
State Orchestra has performed. I have also performed as a soloist and a
chamber musician with the orchestra together with numerous visiting and
local conductors.
Another important and inseparable field of my work is my pedagogical
work with my students. My students from the Cyprus School of Music are
the first line up of the Cyprus Youth Orchestra which I have established
wanting the orchestra to promote clarinet in Cyprus. The orchestra
comprises of ten to twenty-two year olds.
Every year I teach at the Summer Music School which is organised under
the auspices of the Ministry of Education and Culture. At this school I
prepare students for orchestra and chamber performing.
I am proud to say that my students take part in all the significant concerts
in Cyprus.
At least twice a year I organise soloist performances of my students.
These events are attended and appreciated widely by the parents,
pedagogues and colleagues who know and value my work.
During the last two years I have been in charge of the Cyprus Clarinet
Band which has presented a number of significant concerts. At the recent
performance of the Cyprus Youth Orchestra in Greece, the Cyprus
Clarinet Band performed solo supported by the orchestra.
My pedagogical work and its success are well known to those who work at
the Ministry of Culture, i.e. Cultural Services.
Since September 2004 I have been coaching a student of mine, Angelos
Angelides, who has joined the Cyprus State Orchestra as co-principal
clarinet.
Personal and Education:
I was born on May 3, 1961 in Niksic, Yugoslavia. Before coming to Cyprus
I lived and worked mostly in Belgrade. Since the age of nine I have been
playing clarinet. After finishing the elementary musical education in
Podgorica and Belgrade, I began my studies at the Belgrade University
where I graduated from the Academy of Music in 1986, in the class of
Prof. Milenko Stefanovic.
Having graduated I attended the advanced training at the Chopin
Academy in Warsaw, Poland, in the class of Prof. Ludwik Kurkiewicz, and
also took the course in music interpretation at the Moscow Conservatory
of Music "P.I. Tchaikovsky" in the class of Prof. Vladimir Sokolov.
I performed with remarkable success at a number of concerts, both as a
soloist and a chamber musician. I had numerous solo recitals in many
cities all over former Yugoslavia and abroad, in Poland, Czechoslovakia,
Germany, Austria, Russia and Cyprus. I also performed as a soloist with
the Belgrade Philharmonics, Podgorica Symphony Orchestra, Pristina
Symphony Orchestra, Belgrade Artistic Ensemble Orchestra, Warsaw
Academic Symphony Orchestra as well as the Cyprus State Orchestra.
I have been awarded a number of prizes and recognitions at the national
music competitions and made recordings for the Yugoslav radio and TV
stations. I am the winner of the special prize from the International
Competition of Youth, Clarinetists in Wloszakowice, Poland in 1989.
In 1988 I was the assistant conductor for the wind instruments at the
International Summer Seminar of the International Jeunesses Musicales
Orchestra in Poland. In 1989 I successfully auditioned for the bass
clarinet at Gerard Hauz, Leipzig, Germany amongst 167 candidates.
For five years I taught as a full time professor at one of the schools of
music in Belgrade.
From 1990 to 1995 I worked as the first clarinetist in the Belgrade Artistic
Ensemble Symphony Orchestra "St. Binicki".
