On behalf of the committee of SYMESOK, I would like to welcome you to our website.
SYMESOK is the Musicians' Guild of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra, and was formed
two years ago, in order to safeguard and defend the working rights of our members,
both collectively and individually, and to promote the artistic work of our musicians.
Since 2006, our guild has been affiliated to PASEY-PEO – the Pancyprian Trade Union of
Workers in Sevices- and all our members are members of the Union. Together with
PASEY-PEO we have been fighting for proper recognition of our profession – that of
orchestral musician, and we have managed, for the first time since the creation of the
orchestra in 1987, to have our status recognised as full-time employees of the orchestra.
We are currently in negotiations with our employers, the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra
Foundation, in order to reach a collective agreement setting out in full our terms of
employment.
At the same time, SYMESOK recognises that our strongest weapon for safeguarding, and
giving credibility to our working demands is our strength as an artistic body. Our
musicians have stuck together, and given strength to each other through difficult times,
to become today the leading classical music ensemble in Cyprus. We have always been
aware of our individual and collective responsibility to you, our audience, who are the
reason for our existence. We therefore welcome any comments you may have concerning
both this website, or our guild.
